Scripture Verses and Reflections on Family: Honoring Your Parents

Our parents are usually the first people we interact with after we are born. They are the people who stay up late hours in the night until we fall asleep and the people who guide us in our character and behavior as we grow older. One of the ten commandments tells us to “Honor Our Mother and Father,” but what does it really mean to honor them?

As we walk in discipleship as Calvary Road students, let us understand what the scripture tells us about the two figureheads of our family, our mothers and fathers, and how God wants us to be with them in this walk of faith.

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

- Exodus 20:12

Growing up, we see our parents as our guardians, the people who will guide us through life and our support system. Although all of us have very different relationships with our parents, we must remember that they have done their best to raise us, even if it wasn’t perfect. Christian love is sacrificial and just as our parents have sacrificed so much for us to help us get what we need, we must give them the love and respect they deserve back.

It can be difficult as we get older. When we experience the world and live differently than them and have different perspectives, tensions and challenges will arise. Perspectives will clash along the way. However, this should not be the barrier that keeps us from being with them and loving them as they are.

“Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,”

- Peter 5: 5-6

You may come to a point wherein you and your parents don’t see eye to eye. When this happens, you might be thinking, “what should I do? What is the Christian way of handling this?” Nowadays, the norm of the world would be to rebel, to run away, or to confront your parents and make them feel bad about themselves. However, here, we say, “Pray for them and pray for yourself. Pray for forgiveness and for a heart to forgive.” Know that you and your parents are not perfect, but as a family, it is something you can work through together.

Learning about Christ is a journey, one that you would love to share with your parents. Going to church and hearing scripture is a great way to bond as a family and to grow together as Christians.
